Promises from the Book of 2 Peter

The second chapter of Peter relates to the promises of God and what they will do for us and also a ladder to take us to the kingdom if we accept this as our goal.  I think we will dissect these verses as best we can to get the real meaning.  Most people just read it over and go on but it is full of meaning.  And we need to know what truths are here for us to trust in.  So let's begin.

2 Peter 1:2-11  "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.  Let's stop there for a minute.

First, grace and peace is multiplied to us in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.  The knowledge of God and of Jesus is what gives us grace and peace and it will be multiplied to us and His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who has called us by glory and virtue, and He has given us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these we may become partakers of His divine nature and we will escape the corruption that is in the world through lust.  Are we ready to receive His grace and peace through the study of His word?  Are we ready to partake of His divine nature through His promises so that we may escape the corruption in this world?  Let's what the rest of the verses say.

"But also for this very reason giving all diligence add to you faith, virtue (behavior showing high moral standards), to virtue, add knowledge, and to knowledge, self-control, and to self-control, perseverance (Steadfastness in doing something despite difficult or delay in achieving success.) and to perseverance, godliness ( the quality of being devoutly religious)  and to godliness, brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness, love."  I call this Peter's ladder and it is a ladder of success in our Christian walk.  Let's go on to the rest of these verses.

"For if these things be in you and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins."  These things, is speaking of Peter's ladder.

"Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

If you do these things, your will never stumble, and an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Again, these things is speaking of Peter's ladder.

2 Peter 1:12  "For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things..."  there are these things again, that Peter is not negligent to remind us of them.

2 Peter 1:13  "Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you."
Another reminder.

2 Peter 1:15  "Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease."

I think Peter did a good job of reminding us of these things that are so important to our walk with Jesus.  Will you accept his reminders.  I want to.  I think he was very sincere in trying to help us in our Christian walk, don't you?

2 Peter 2:9  "The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment."

God knows how to deliver us from temptation, it is up to us if we want Him to.

2 Peter 3:9  "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness, but is long-suffering toward us, not willing  that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."

I love this one, God is not slack concerning His promise, like some of us are but is long-suffering toward us because He is unwilling that any of us should perish, but that all should  repent of their sins and be saved.

This study could have been two studies but I didn't want to break the train of thought, so put it all in one study.  I do hope this has helped you in your walk with God.  We need all the help that we can get and no one is more capable of helping us than God is and He has given us plenty of reasons to walk with Him.  Will you give your heart to Him today.  Grandma Joan
